Made in Turkey (2017)

My performance is inspired by my experience of working as a sales assistant in a luxury department store in London. In the store we displayed clothes on tables in piles. I folded clothes in a precise and uniform way. Throughout the day, customers would come and look through the pile, undoing my work. As soon as they walked away I would refold the piles.I have often seen the words ‘Made in Turkey’ written inside the clothing that I have been selling at work.

Here in Adana I have seen lots of places selling fabric and clothing at wholesalers. I have also observed people many at work on the street, in shops and markets and in the home. So much is being created, right here in the city. In London, where I’m from most things are made outside of the city and most likely outside of the country. When I was working in retail, the action of folding and refolding the clothes, caused me to consider my place within the capitalist structures of the exploitative fashion retail industry. Both as a sales person working for commission and a consumer of clothing I find myself unavoidably complicit.
