Çoz Güzel – and “we will eat liver but if you want kebab you must go now (2018)
Tutunamayanlar as it is called in Turkish is a noun derived from the verb tutunmak ‘to hold on to (sth.)’ and perhaps the best way to describe my experience is the negative, expressed by the infix –ama–, which adds the meaning of ‘not being able to’, an inability.
Speaking and living with a Turkish family, the hiatus created by the difficulty to communicate was mediated through the extensive and ongoing use of Google Translator. The translation created a series of misunderstandings that on its own lead to different understandings.
I became interested on the value of the dissemination embedded in publicity and publicity as a particular motivational factor to present an alternative to ideological speech in the context of a location where speech can be so heavily ideological.
Living the inevitability of being a Turista in the city, I wanted to explore the silliness inherent to my interactions so I used the Turkish translations produced during the residency, to create posters with sentences like “Çoz Güzel – and “we will eat liver but if you want kebab you must go now”. They were descriptions of events and conversations showing the belying experience of language which were placed around the city, next to Turkish adverts and others in places where I spent time speaking to people, going for meals, etc.
These posters didn’t offer much beyond its generic everyday subject compared to the usefulness inherent to the services goods or politics advertised across the city but served as a questioning device to see how the non-production of meaning could produce dialogue.

‘Çok Güzel – ve ‘biz ciğer yiyeceğiz ama eğer kebap yemek istiyorsan şimdi gitmelisin’ (2018)
Tutunamayanlar türkçede isimden fiile çevrilmiş olan ‘tutanmak’ kelimesinden türemiştir ve benim deneyimleri daha iyi anlatması için buna ek olarak ‘yapamamak’ duygusunu –ama- kelimesini de kullanarak ifade etmem gerekir.
Bir türk ailesi ile yaşamak ortak dili kullanmadığımız için bazı ilginç zor diyalogların oluşması neden oldu. U zorlukları aşmak için google’in otomatik dil çevirme özelliğini kullandık. Bu çeviri yöntemi bazı şeyleri yanlış anlamamıza sebebiyet verdi.
Buradan yola çıkarak, ayrıca, yol kenarlarında gördüğm tanıtım liçin kullanılan yazıları incelemeye başladım. Bu tanıtımlar uygulandıkları yer ve fikir üzerinden düşünürsek bulunduğumuz bölgede farklı ve yeni bir dil oluşturuyorular.
Şehirde bir turist olmanın kaçınılmaz sonuçları eşliğinde, şehir halkı ile gelişen dialogları kendiliğimce keşfetmek istedim incelemeye başladım ve çalışmamda bu konuşma metinlerini kullanarak posterlar yarattım. Mesela ‘Çok Güzel – ve ‘biz ciğer yiyeceğiz ama eğer kebap yemek istiyorsan şimdi gitmelisin’ Bu cümleler yemek yemeye gittiğim mekanlarda, sokakta insanlarla kurduğum iletişimler esnasında yaşadığım dil konusunda yaşadığım çelişkileri anlatıyor.
Bu posterler günlük hayatın dinamiğinden başka bir anlam ifade etmiyorlar. Onların amacı şehrin hizmet ve duyuru gibi alanlarda kendi dilini oluşturmalarına yardımcı olmaları ama aynı zamanda düşünce yapımızda hiç farkında olmadığımız bir algı mekanızması yaratıyorlar.
